Thoughts

We are given commandments from Jesus and the disciples, but God always gives commandments to certain people. He gave Jesus specific commandments (John 12:49). A commandment to the Levi people (Heb 7:5).

All commandments Jesus gave us come down to not treating someone in a way you would not want to be treated. To love others. To not live by the sword or you will die by the sword. To serve others.

Matt 5:13 Notes:

You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

Thoughts: Is that where we are as a church today? not good for anything except to be trampled under people's feet? What have we done to serve others? to heal others? to help others? to have grace and mercy? to make them feel loved and accepted?

Matthew 15: 1-7 Notes:

The Pharisees and scribes told people that if they told their mother or father that what they would have given to them is going to go to God then they can do that, but Jesus says no, you are dishonoring your parents by doing this and putting tradition above my commandment to honor mother and father. I can easily see this translated to our current society where we talk about putting God above everyone, but here Jesus gets mad at them for what they probably thought was putting God first.

Matthew 19 Notes:

When asked which commands he needed to keep, Jesus responded:

You shall not murder, commit adultery, steal, or bear false witness. You must honor your mother and father and love your neighbor as yourself. When the young man said he did all these things, Jesus then said if you would be perfect, then go give what you have to the poor and the man walks away sad. Jesus says it is hard for a rich person to get into heaven. The word used for perfect is teleios which means to reach an end, complete all its part, mature. Could this also mean to complete the commandments?

Regarding the Commandments/Law in General

For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well- Heb 7:12

For on one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God- Heb 7:18-19
